Robyn Denny’s ‘The Austin Reed Mural’ achieves world auction record for the artist

Robyn Denny's 'The Austin Reed Mural', offered on 18 October in Christie's Modern British Evening Sale, achieved a world auction record for the artist.

The painting is today widely recognised as not only one of Robyn Denny's most well-known paintings, but also a hugely significant painting in the history of post-war British art.

"'The Austin Reed Mural' endures status as an icon ahead of its time because of its explosive and highly original fusion of both Pop art and abstract style. The picture is one that encapsulates much of the distinctly, modish, metropolitan look that, from around 1966 onwards, was to dominate the landscape of 'Swinging London' from Carnaby Street to the King's Road. Much of this 'Swinging Sixties' style was, pioneered by Denny and his close friend and colleague Richard Smith, who together at the Royal College of Art in the late-1950s, were to lay the foundations for a whole range of new approaches to painting that went on to inspire future generations of artists."
